Love Letters of Sadness
I'm not sure if there is anything in this world as precious to me as someone expressing feelings for me through written communication. Yes, a love letter.
I read them over and over again and my heart skips a beat every time I do. It means that I have touched the life of another human being in such a way that they felt compelled to tell me in writing.
The paper of my love letters is well worn. My hands hold each letter tightly, as if it could bring that person back to me. To see their face so close to mine one more time. To feel the taste of them on my lips as sweetly as the first time. I feel their words sink into my soul.
The sadness is that each time I receive a love letter, the relationship ends shortly after that. As if writing about feelings destroys them. A beach filled with sandcastles washed away by the tide.
I can build more castles. Is love worth building? Do I have the capacity in my heart to watch them fall into the sea one by one?
When I am very old I will sit alone with my letters. My wrinkled hands holding them close to my heart. Sadness and loss fading. A smile will animate my weathered face. Those castles were really quite beautiful.
